“Where there is a woman there is magic.

If there is a moon falling from her mouth, she is a woman who knows her magic, who can share or not share her powers. A woman with a moon falling from her mouth, roses between her legs and tiaras of Spanish moss, this woman is a consort of the spirits.”

About Womanish: A Black Woman In A Black Church

"If you've known even one of these thing--heartbreak, loss, depression, fear--then we're sisters.

Because all those things happened to me."

A powerful memoir about healing, faith, and the sacred strength of sisterhood in the heart of East New York Brooklyn, NY.

Womanish is a memoir told through a collection of deeply personal essays chronicling my journey as the coordinator of The Jewel  Ministry--a women's collective at a Black Church in Brooklyn that I call, "The Motown of Churches."

Like the Motown legends who were shaped into icons, I and the women I served with were transformed, not by fame, but by faith fellowship, and finding our voices.

In Womanish, you'll meet women from all walks of life, survivors of violence, mothers navigating poverty and heartbreak, and leaders rising in the face of racism and fear.

This book is a testimony. A healing balm. A revival of spirit.

This book is for the women who

has ever questioned her worth or her calling

Grew up in or left the church

Believes in God, but needs to heal from life

Believes, or wants to believe, that sisterhood can save her.

Is ready to reclaim her voice, her story, and her joy.

If that's you--welcome home.

About Me

I'm M. Hakikah Shamsideen - author, spiritual teacher, and the founding voice behind The Holistic Homebody.

For over a decade, I served as the Coordinator of the Women's Ministry at St. Paul Community Baptist Church

in Brooklyn, NY.

This memoir reflects my journey and my love for sacred sisterhood that shaped it.  I believe that healing begins at home.  And for me, that home was a church filled with women, prayer, and the healing spirit of God.
